Internet in Greece - WiFi vs SIM vs eSIM

Going to Greece from the UK? Compare WiFi, local SIM cards, UK roaming and travel eSIMs - with island-specific tips for Crete, Rhodes and Corfu.

Greece is an island country for many travelers. You might have great WiFi at the hotel, then no connection on a ferry, a beach day, or a mountain drive. Plan for mobile data and treat WiFi as a bonus.

1) Hotel WiFi

Hotel WiFi is fine for light browsing. In peak season it can slow down in the evenings. It also does not help you with navigation, taxis, and bookings when you leave the hotel.

2) Local SIM in Greece

Local SIMs work well but require a store visit. If you arrive late or have tight transfers between islands, that is a hassle.

3) UK roaming in Greece

After Brexit, many UK plans charge a daily fee for roaming in Europe. That fee stacks up on longer holidays. Roaming can also include fair-use limits.

4) Travel eSIM (recommended)

A travel eSIM is the easiest setup for most UK tourists: install on WiFi before travel, connect on arrival, and keep your UK number. If available, we use partner networks (e.g. Vodafone (5G), Wind (5G)).

Quick verdict

  • Island holidays: eSIM is usually the best balance of convenience and predictable spend.
  • Long stays with local calls: local SIM can make sense.
  • WiFi only: OK only if you stay inside the resort.
